Independent Grocer Network

For independent grocers and the wholesalers that serve them

I am about to open a small (3,000 sq.ft. of retail space + 3,000 storage and prep) specialty food market. I am looking for a sophisticated POS + inventory system. I don't need anything custom designed. Being a start-up we can adjust our way of doing business to suit the way the software is designed to work. I don't need the most expensive system in the world; but I am willing to spend some money for useful features. We probably will start out with 4 stations, expandable to 6.

I am opening up next door to our own successful 30 seat restaurant and I am hoping for some operational synergies.

Any recommendations?

IT Retail is a great point of sale solution. There primary target is independent grocers, and they are dedicated to helping independent grocers succeed: http://www.itretail.com
I would look at ScanMaster or ISS45 from Retalix/StoreNext sctrictly made for the indpendents. I am not sure what area of the country you are going to be opening in but you can take a look at www.dumac.com if you are opening in the North East.
WE use ECRS Catapult. We bought touch screens for a better employee interface. Our training time is short for new cashiers. We run over a million dollars a year thru one register. I could do 6 million thru four registers. We find the system fast for the customer, the most expensive time. Consider a U shaped checkout lay out. Makes for less privacy in the cashier setting and takes less space. See Whole foods.
Thank you everyone for your suggestions. I will be looking into all these systems. Yes, Chris I am in the Northeast (Long Island, NY to be exact) and I will contact Dumac; although they are pretty far from me.
One thing I forgot to mention was that we will be building a small food court-like eating counter near the back of the market. It may be too much to ask, but ideally the software would be able to deal with a quick service type food ordering.
Hey Chris,
Several of our customers have the exact same setup as you. They way we tackle this is by using scales. Pizza, chicken, pasta etc, are all charged per lb. Items such as sandwiches have a set price. Its easy and fast. again its http://www.itretail.com
