Self-Checkout: Staff Replacement or Additional Service?

I recently shopped at a CVS near my apartment that encouraged its shoppers to use its self-checkout machines by removing staff from all of its registers. It was clear they were looking at the technology to replace staff. I think they should be used as an added service but that shoppers should still have a choice.

Where do you weigh in?

Selfcheckouts have their place in most every market as there are those whom do not desire personal contact with anybody. In the grocery industry, the best public relations a store can have is interaction between employees and customers. Changing to all self check outs, no matter how much savings, I feel would be the worst thing any business could do. Lose the personal touch lose the customer base.... . Some technological advances are not what is best for busines practices.
