Grocery Store Signs (interior)

The design of any sign is only limited by its function and expense.  A very utilitarian sign may cost very little while a very expensive sign may lose some of its functionality.  The sign design can say a great deal about what type of experience customers should expect.  The most inexpensive signs may tell customers that prices will be kept very low in the store because money isn’t being wasted on expensive signage (and the savings are passed to the customer).  However, cheap signs may send an…See More

"It's always easy to tell when an employee has no idea what they're doing.  Good employees are trained and educated employees.  Deli employees should also remember when someone is buying sliced meat they probably will be buying…"

Grocery Store Restrooms

excerpt from my book "Grocery Store Design":Public restrooms can be costly with regards to labor for cleaning & maintenance. However, the importance of public restrooms for customers should not be overlooked; they are more than mere conveniences. For parents with young children in tow, restrooms can be a necessity. Customers may choose a store with available restrooms rather than a store without. If public restrooms are going to be provided, they must be more than simply available; they must…See More

Bud Perry replied to Joseph Tarnowski's discussion How Does Your Store Layout and Assortment Impact Your Checkout Configuration?
"I completely agree! I can't count the number of store owners I've designed for who insisted on having a large number of checkstands that they would never operate all at once, even on their busiest days. I think it sends a clear message to…"

Store Designer

I have designed grocery stores for over 26 years including close to 100 (includes some chains) along the West Coast. I've had a hand in Fred Meyers, many Thriftways, IGAs, Food Lion, Yoke's, Nature's Fresh NW, and dozens of small one-up independents.

I worked for Commercial Design Systems, United Grocers, Kysor-Kalt Manufacturing (refrigeration), and PayLess Drug Stores NW while a resident of Oregon from 1986 - 2000.

Grocery Decor & Color

(excerpt from my book "Grocery Store Planning")

Like signage, décor delivers a message to customers. A clean, utilitarian design can tell customers a store is focusing on low prices and not spending a lot of money on fancy signage and décor. However, cheap, flimsy, or dirty décor can tell customers…
